Wart's Nightmare is the fifth secret level in World 9: Edge of Beyond and based on World 7-2, the final level from Super Mario Bros 2. This level can be accessed by completing the Black Switch Palace and The Fusionist's Lab in World 5: Gehenna.
Layout[]
The level illustrates how Wart's ambitions did not go as planned. While most of Wart's Subcon strongholds were safely integrated into the physical world, his own palace was unlucky and got stranded in a Flood-infested region of the Halo universe. The Flood quickly overwhelmed the palace, infecting regular Subcon enemies into vicious monstrosities (barring Sparks) and forcing Wart to seal himself inside his chambers to escape the horrors lurking outside.
The level is a near-perfect replica of World 7-2 from Super Mario Bros. 2, although noticeably more dark and organic, with the architecture rotting away and Flood spores covering most surfaces. Most of the side paths have been clogged with Flood growth, forcing the player to take a more linear route through the palace. Several points throughout the level are guarded by Flood-infested Birdos, which are stronger than regular ones, can absorb more damage than normal, and have a medium chance of spitting infested eggs that hatch into Flood-infected spawn.
The player must make his or her way across the chains and conveyor belts of the level, avoiding the grim creatures that block the path, to eventually reach Wart's chambers. However, it seems like Wart couldn't hide forever. When entering his chamber, the player will find him dead and overtaken by the flood. There is a hole in the floor that will take the player to the boss fight against the following amalgamation: a fusion-infected Flood Cacobirdo.

- Prior to the v0.875 update of Mushroom Kingdom Fusion, the Flood Cacobirdo was absent as it was a work in progress at the time and a green wand was provided instead to clear the level.
- Prior to the v0.88 update of MKF, the player could opt to play this level before clearing The Fusionist's Lab. That change as clearing The Fusionist's Lab is one of the requirements needed to play this level or otherwise this level remains inaccessible even if the Black Switch Palace is cleared.
- Early development of MKF included a five-part series of levels known as Subcon Panic!. The fifth act was to be set in World 9 with Wart as the main boss but was likely replaced with this level.
- The Mushroom Blocks in the second vertical section were once replaced with diggable sand but reverted back to Mushroom Blocks
