Volkmire's Inferno is the 3rd secret level in World 4: The Demon Realm and it is based on the level of the same name from the classic NES game Battletoads made by Rare.
Layout[]
The level takes the player through a crystalline underground cavern on Planet Ragnarok, filled with a flammable liquid that resembles water but is deadly to the touch. In the original game, the two main characters, Rash and Zitz of the Battletoads, travel to this cave as they are on mission to defeat the evil Dark Queen on her planet and rescue their kidnapped friends, Pimple, the third member of the Battletoads, and Princess Angelica, to get her to meet her father, the Terran Emperor.
The first area is a slow-moving, auto-scroll section that takes the player through a cave packed with a variety of ferocious yet bizarre creatures, such as the rat-like Giblets, Lost Souls, Tar Skulls, Heck Demons, and Houndours. The player also must jump on some logs to cross to the flammable liquid at the bottom and break some red chests for some power-ups or sub-weapons.
After that, the player will find themselves in the next room with a checkpoint, a SMB2 mushroom, and a personal escape aircraft called the Toad Plane. There is no solid ground to stand on since the cave is on fire. meaning that the player will have to board the aircraft and pass through a deadly aerial obstacle course made up of electrical barriers, entire storms of fireballs, and wave upon wave of missiles. Between each leg of the course is a small space with a few coins and a mushroom, but a single error here can easily cost the player their life. If they can manage to make their way through the tunnel alive, the player will reach the goal line and escape from the cavern for good, clearing the level in the process.

- Space Invaders were originally found in this level but were replaced with other enemies after the level was revamped.
- According to EddyMRA, the graphics in this stage had their saturation reduced by 50% in the v0.8 update of MKF, resulting in the objects becoming much easier to see, especially during the fast auto-scroll second area.
- The Aircraft originally returned in Bomber Arena (then known as Planet Bomber) for the third area of that level but it was removed after the level was revamped in the v0.88 Rev C update of MKF.
