Volcanic Ascent is the 12th stage of World 4: The Demon Realm.
Layout[]
This level takes place in a smoke-filled mountain with a huge volcano in the center under the red sky. The Mushroom Kingdom Coalition will confront the Black Dragon, the leader in charge of the attack, with his army on Crimson Dominion.
The first area takes place outside, as the player must leap over pools of lava while fighting the various demon enemies, such as Fire Demons, Bone Towers, Fire Keeses and Lost Souls, that inhabit the path and avoiding the Lava Geysers that shoot out of the lava. At the near end of this area, the player is greeted by a bat-like devil known as Vire, who talks about enjoying the volcano before informing the player about the Fusionist's Finest and taking a different route since the normal ones are blocked. After that, the player enters the volcano inside.
In the second area, Vire stops the player to explain more about Gehenna and a beast living under the water before grabbing the players in order to not blow his cover to Loki before letting go as the volcano unsurprisingly erupts, forcing the player to climb up and out to evade the approaching lava. Once the player makes it to the top, pull out the rocket to escape to the next area.
The last area has the player travel back outside on the top of the volcano as they deal with more demon enemies, such as Cacodemons and Orcs, and ride on some platforms carried by the lava geyser to cross.
The player then fights the Black Dragon inside the volcano. The Black Dragon attacks by spitting fireballs at them and a blue flame that hits the lava at the bottom; it will cause a lava geyser while flying around in a circular pattern. He can only be harmed by projectile attacks, so an Ice Rod is provided in case the player loses a power-up during the fight or didn't have one before the fight. When the Black Dragon has half of his health depleted, he will fly slowly to the lava and drink it to power up, causing fire orbs around his body to shoot him in the head to take damage and start attacking a bit faster. Even some of the normal fireballs will leave a fire pillar on the ground. After a tough battle, The Black Dragon finally goes down as he falls to the lava before exploding to death, ending his terror upon the kingdom and the Profaned Heights as the last portal opens to the Searing Mountain on the map, where Astaroth and Loki have taken over the land.

- The original name of this level was Death Volcano.
- The video demonstrating this level was also the first one to introduce the integration of the codec system and NPCs into levels.
- The music heard in this level is the Scarlet Tempest theme from the 2006 game Ys Origin.
- The tileset used in this level comes from the 1995 SNES game The Flintstones. In the newest version, the assets now come from the Mega Drive game Blades of Vengeance.
- This level was one of two levels split from the now-removed level Dragon's Dominion, which featured the Black Dragon as a boss. The other level was Crimson Dominion.
- This level was originally planned for World 5 but was moved to World 4.
- Nipper Plants, Munchers, Flame Witches, Pain Elementals, and Demon Archers were originally found in this level but were removed after the level was revamped.
- Fire Keeses and Bony Beetles were previously absent.
- There is a key and keyhole in the first area but doesn't lead to a secret path as this level has only one exit.
