The Fusionist's Lab is the final level of World 5: Gehenna.
Layout[]
The level starts outside of The Fusionist's laboratory. The player must fight off against Hyperworms and Multiworms with blocks provided to hit them on the way. They are greeted by Professor Hector who explains that they must dig underground, since there isn't an entry to it. Next, the player swims underground while avoiding the Electric Seaweed and multiple alien enemies scattered around the area, and finds a Trampoline in a block that is needed to reach the lab entrance from above.
Soon after, the player then finds themselves up top from the hole with a Message Block explaining that they breached the lab containment, causing the alarms to go off while they find themselves a Checkpoint. From there, the player has to find three keycards around the area to access the door on the top right, blocked by a gate that can be removed by pressing the ON/OFF switch in the top left room, and further progress into the main castle exterior of the level while dodging security devices set up in this place by The Fusionist.
The player will eventually find the first keycard (Blue) by going through the first door. The first room consists of capsules (broken and unbroken) with Goombas and pipes with Venus Fire Traps, along with Box and Sphere Drones. The player will then encounter the first fusion enemy, the Goomblant.
The next room contains Rebel Soldiers with a couple Boogeymen in it. Throughout the level, the player will encounter various weapons to fight against these creations. The player must hit the switch to progress to the next room, which contains Boogey Soldiers. The player then acquires the blue key and finds the door back to the main room. This is the same for the next rooms to find the next keycards.
After using the blue keycard on the gates, it opens up, which reveals the door to the next room. The next room consists of fighting several enemies from the Zelda series, along with another Box Drone. The player will also encounter Space Tektite, which are Tektites fused with Space Invaders. The room after that is the same, except with a couple of Metroid enemies and Pipeegas (Geegas fused with Pipis from Mega Man 2).
The player then enters a room with the Red Keycard to open the doors and blocks to make the elevator appear, along with some powerups and a Checkpoint right next to the door. The player will then head to the next area, which is a mostly underwater section with various marine enemies, such as Chowmein-Congas, Skull Fishes, Flying Killers, and more. The next room contains Green Monsters and Chowmein-Congas, with a hybrid of them in this section. The player will then soon find them in a room with Spinies and Spiked Tetris Blocks falling from above. When the player goes upwards to investigate, the Tetrakitus are seen throwing them, along with Boogey Soldiers as well. The player will find the yellow keycard accessible after opening the door with the red keycard, which unlocks the yellow gates that press the switch and open the barrier blocking the door that takes the player to the castle interior. Although you can get rewards by finding the secret area accessed after finding the key hidden in a block with a room that contains a Reserve Tank and the Protection Crystal.
The player will then find themselves in the other half of the level with a Checkpoint and white flying orbs that are harmless background objects throughout this section of the level. They will see Flurries (And ones trapped in ice) along with Iron Maidens, resulting in an Iron Flurry fusion, along with a Venus Fire Goomba. The player will drop down to the next section, where an Angry Mousun appears, dropping bombs to destroy the bricks blocking the way down, along with more Venus Fire Goombas. They will find another Checkpoint and blocks of powerups are provided along the way. The next section consists of Crabmeats, Waddle Doos, and Eukaryotes, which are eventually fused into other enemies. Along with two ORB-03 Sarubinauts in the room. The last room before the boss room (via the old wooden door) consists of multiple enemies, such as Lost Souls, Boos, Big Boos, and others, along with more fusion-related enemies, such as Pain Pillars, Eyeball Devils, and Grein Boo. The player will also need to press a switch that removes the pencil guarding the door. The player can also find a secret library accessible by pressing a P-Switch that unlocks a secret door that contains a chest full of diamonds, Rupees, a 3-UP Moon, some powerups, another reserve tank, and a Protective Crystal. It acts as a shortcut to the boss room.
Once the player enters the door, they will find themselves in a hallway with a Birdo captured in a lab capsule and a Cacodemon caught in a crystal. The player will talk to Professor Hector again, explaining the Fusionist's absence and that a new challenger is ahead. After talking to him and armoring, the player will enter the door and fight Cacobirdo, the World Boss of Gehenna. Defeating the Cacobirdo clears World 5 for the player.

Dialogues[]
- Professor Hector: We have finally arrived at the Fusionist's Lab! If the Fusionist is here, we can possibly end this nightmare much sooner than we anticipated. There doesn't seem to be a direct entrance anywhere, however. Fortunately for us, the soil up ahead seems soft enough to dig through. That could be our way in!
- Message Block: ALERT! LAB CONTAINMENT BREACH DETECTED! Autonomous anti-personnel security system deployed!
- Professor Hector: Something does not feel right... The Fusionist is nowhere to be seen. It is as if we are being lured into a trap. We have no choice but to push onwards, however. The fate of our worlds depend on us!
Trivia[]
- There were some earlier ideas that were scrapped while the level was inaccessible and in development, which included the following:
- The Fusionist being the boss of this stage, while Cacobirdo was supposed to be assigned as the Mini-Boss of the level.
- Zingerok, a fusion of a Zinger from Donkey Kong Country and an Octorok. Instead, the Octorok fused with the Buster Ball, resulting in Octopang, as Zingers are not featured in Mushroom Kingdom Fusion.
- Working titles for the level, such as Castle Gehenna, Lab of The Fusionist, and Fusionist's Lab (A shortened version of the latter). Also, the level originally had a Castle/Fortress level icon, before being changed into a WB level. Then it was removed but later reverted to its former status as the World Boss stage of World 5.
- Most of the tilesets from this level are derived from the Amiga game Ruff'n'Tumble.
- The following changes were made to the level in the v0.88 update of MKF:
- The water section in the first area is removed and is now entirely underground.
- The following enemies or obstacles were removed from the level: Electric Seaweed, Ichthyosaur, Pod Alien, Alien Grunt, and Big Boo.
- The following enemies were added to the level: Crystals, Coverns, Frozen Shades, Carnivores Plants, Floating Skulls, Pain Elementals, and Sniper Joes.
- Octopangs were the newest fusion enemy added.
