The Crossroads is the 7th secret level in the Mushroom Kingdom.
Layout[]
The level is something of a "Crossroads" (hence the name) or intersection of worlds. Plot-wise, this is the point in the Mushroom Kingdom where the Fusionist's assimilation of the world began, spreading outwards from there and creating the region known as "No Man's Land". Multiple universes are fused together here and the player will need to pass back and forth between both them and the Mushroom Kingdom in order to make it through.
The core of the level is a hybrid of Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros. 3 elements, with three lengthy rooms: a SMB3-esque overworld, a underground sewer area, and an SMB3 aerial platform area. As the player progresses through the level, they will pass through various sections of different games and battling the many enemies of each section further enhancing the fusion. There is at least one fusion section to represent every world of Mushroom Kingdom Fusion, excluding Gehenna and Twisted Reality.
The following sections are featured in the level:
- Green Greens (Kirby's Dream Land)
- Green Hill Zone (Sonic the Hedgehog)
- Bomb Man Stage (Mega Man)
- Marble Madness area
- Prehistorik Island (Bonk)
- Mana Caverns (Secret of Mana)
- Accursed Ruins Catacombs (Demon's Crest)
- Red Rock City (Commander Keen)
- White Dungeon area (The Legend of Zelda)
- Brinstar (Metroid)
- NY sewer area (TMNT NES)
- Persian Dungeon (Prince of Persia SNES)
- Egyptian Tomb (The Lost Vikings)
- Yolkfolk Treehouse Village (Fantastic Dizzy)
- Miracle Valley (Alex Kidd in Miracle World)
- Cloud Man Stage (Mega Man 7)
- The outside fort of Dracula Castle (Castlevania)
- Angel Land Castle (Kid Icarus)
- New Junk City (Earthworm Jim)
Development History[]
Lars Luron revealed that The Crossroads was originally meant as a remake of one of Hello's many demo levels, similar to Zero Falls. Thinking that wasn't really a fitting level for the "No Man's Land" area of the Mushroom Kingdom, where all of that world's Fusion levels are located, he redesigned the whole thing from scratch.

Dialogue[]
Message Block: "WARNING: This area is the central point where the Fusionist's assimilation of worlds has begun to affect the Mushroom Kingdom."
Message Block: "The Fusion effect is strong here, so strong that it has begun radiating outwards, affecting all other nearby levels."
Message Block: "The boundaries between the dimensions are stretched thin here, allowing other universes to seep into our own. Be careful."
Trivia[]
- The music heard in the first area is the Super Mario Bros. 3 Medley theme from the 2001 Gamecube game Super Smash Bros Melee, which is also the music heard in World 1's map in MKF. The music in the 2nd area a rock remix of the underground theme from Super Mario Bros.
- In earlier versions of MKF, this level uses a remix of the overworld theme of Super Mario World that can also be heard in the intro of the popular fan-made flash series Super Mario Bros Z (a Mario/Sonic crossover series with elements of Dragon Ball Z). This music is retained in the third, athletic area of the level while the first two areas use different music.
- According to a long-defunct MKF forum, there were plans for a fourth, castle section in this level but was scrapped due to how large the level already was with its three existing sections.
- The underground section originally had some graphics from the underground levels in Super Mario All-Stars version of SMB1, which is also seen in Goomba Mines, but they were changed to a Mario-style sewer background.
