Tainted Toadstool Zone is the 16th level in World 7, Isle of Genesis. It is a fusion between the Mushroom Kingdom and the corrupted environment of Little Planet, from Sonic CD.
Layout[]
After saving Central City from Dr. Eggman's Badnik Army and Metal Sonic, the player returns to Little Planet but notices the landscape has become a combination of the Mushroom Kingdom's various grasslands and the palm tree-lined beaches of Little Planet, corrupted and poisoned to the point of no return. A variety of Badniks and members of Bowser's Koopa Troop have assaulted the player here, and to make things even worse, the level is plagued by a gradual rain of deadly toxic spores, which slowly float down from above. Some of the spores sprout into Nipper Plants while others sprout into deadly Poison Mushrooms that litter the landscape.
After escaping the flurry of toxic spores, the player will find themselves in an auto-scrolling area above raised mushroom platforms, where they will be forced to do battle against the Egg Shroom, a unique machine piloted by the Egg Robo. The Egg Shroom uses the environment's numerous Poison Mushrooms to its advantage, dropping a vast number of them in the player's path. After the Eggrobo is defeated and the level has completed, a battleship passes by the sky as the player hops aboard Tails' Tornado biplane for a chase to the next level: Winged Fortress Zone.

Trivia[]
- This is one of two levels that combine elements of the Mario and Sonic series, the other being Mushroom Hill.
- This level was originally as secret level in older version of MKF.
- Goombas are reskinned as the Poison Mushrooms from Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels. They also had this appearance in Foul Fungi but were recently reskinned in that level to better resemble the Metroid universe.
- Foul Fungi and Tainted Toadstool Zone are both similar in theme as both involved a toxic environment caused by the fusion effect.
