I've changed a lot since I've started hanging with Sonic, but I can't depend on him forever. I know I can do this by myself!
― Tails, Sonic Adventure (1998)

Miles "Tails" Prower is a playable character in Mushroom Kingdom Fusion and member of the Mushroom Kingdom Coalition.

History[]

Tails first began as Sonic's sidekick back in Sonic the Hedgehog 2. He started out as a young admirer of Sonic who aided him in his latest attempt to foil Dr. Eggman's plans. In Sonic the Hedgehog 3, he developed his more unique trait of flying and his swimming ability.

When Sonic Adventure rolled around, Tails discovered he had a knack for machines and became an accomplished inventor, such as remodeling the various Tornado planes used by him and Sonic. He also gained significant self-confidence and learned how to stand on his own two feet to save Station Square from destruction at the hands of one of Eggman's missiles.

Gameplay[]

Tails has many of his abilities from Sonic the Hedgehog 3:

  • He can perform a rolling attack by ducking while running. It's slightly weaker than Sonic's curled-up form in that he can't break bricks or hit ? blocks from the side with it.
  • He can do a spin dash by holding down and the run button.
  • A unique ability to Tails is the ability to fly for a limited time without the use of a leaf/tanooki powerup, though this flight is much slower and runs on a meter.
  • Tails does not drown in Mushroom Kingdom Fusion, unlike the original Sonic games. Tails can swim normally and has movement different from that of the Mario Bros.
  • He is one of the smaller characters in the game and is slower than Sonic.
  • Tails, like Sonic, also has a nasty knockback when hit. While playing as Tails, he uses a ring-based damage system like in the first Sonic games.

Level Controls[]

See Basic Controls which goes over Map and standard Level Controls.

Below are non-standard controls specific to Tails in his Initial form. Parenthesis indicate optional.

Action Key[s] Description
Running Hold RUN Tails moves in the Left or Right direction at a faster speed. Tails can jump farther and higher while Running.
Spin Attack [Movement] + Press JUMP Jumping within the vicinity of enemies ("spinning") as Tails hurts them, except for some enemies that can't be dashed into. Generally watch out for spiky enemies.
Spin Dash Hold DOWN + Press RUN (Continuously) Tails blasts forward with a revved-up Spin Attack from a stationary position. Will also do damage just like the Spin Attack.
Flight Hold [Directional Button] + Press JUMP + Press JUMP Hold UP and press JUMP twice to begin ascending vertically. Hold LEFT or RIGHT and press JUMP twice to ascend in an upper right or left diagonal (but will eventually fly horizontally).

Tails has a "Flight Meter". At empty, Tails can fly for about 5 seconds before the Flight Meter reaches full. When Flight Meter is full, Flight is no longer possible and Tails will descend. Tails must be standing still (don't Jump or "Move", but can Crouch) for about 9 seconds for the Flight Meter to go from full to empty. You can stop flying prematurely by pressing JUMP again (where Tails will simply drop to the ground).

Power-Up System[]

Power-Up Form Shop Cost Description
Initial Regular Tails N/A This is Tails's regular form. When Tails is hit, he loses all Rings. If he has at least 1 Ring when hit, he stays alive; if not, he dies.
Shield Shield Tails N/A Tails can take a hit without losing any Rings or dying.
Fire Shield Fire Shield Tails $250 Tails can take a hit without losing any Rings or dying.

Press RUN in mid-air to Spin Attack forwards (which helps Sonic to cross long gaps). Sonic is also protected from weak projectiles.

Raccoon Suift Raccoon Tails $300 Tails can take a hit without losing any Rings or dying.

Tails' Flight will last longer (about 2 second).

Combine Ring N/A $500 If Tails has less than 10 Rings, when hit, will combine in 1 Ring. If Sonic has more than 10 Rings, when hit, each 10 Rings becomes 1 Ring. This makes retrieving Rings easier. Can stack with other Power-Ups.
Lightning Shield Lightning Shield Tails $500 Tails can take a hit without losing any Rings or dying.

Press JUMP in mid-air to perform a second Jump. Coins and Rupees are also magnetically attracted to Tails. If in Flight, press JUMP can also perform a second Jump (and ends Flight).

Tanooki Suit Tanooki Tails $600 Same as Raccoon Tails, but when holding DOWN + JUMP, Tails turns into Tails Doll, where he'll be invincible to most projectiles. Releasing Down or Run turns Tails back from Tails Doll. Turning into a Doll while in the Air has Tails descend vertically and can destroy most enemies below.
Bubble Shield Bubble Shield Tails $750 Tails can take a hit without losing any Rings or dying.

Hold DOWN + Press JUMP to perform a higher jump. Tails is also protected from stronger projectiles.

Gyro Man Suit Gyro Man Tails $750 Tails can take a hit without losing any Rings or dying.

Same abilities as Raccoon Tails. Press RUN to throw a gyro projectile, which horizontal along the screen. While the gyro is traveling horizontally, press UP to have it travel vertically up or press DOWN to have it travel vertically down. Can shoot only one at any time. The gyro also pierces through walls and ledges.

Fox McCloud Suit Fox McCloud Tails $1000 Tails can take a hit without losing any Rings or dying.

Press RUN allows Tails to pull out a Blaster gun to shoot out a laser projectile. Shoots three projectiles in quick succession for each shot. Tails can shoot up to seven times at a time before the meter is maxed out, requiring a cooldown before he can use the Blaster again. Pressing SPECIAL lets Tails use the Reflector shield, which protects against most projectile-based attacks. Includes a Rechargeable Energy Shield: when hit, and if you aren't hit for up to 6 seconds, the damage is ignored and Tails keeps the Power-Up. If hit before the 6 seconds is up, the Power-Up is lost.

Trivia[]

  • When the player clears a level & grab a Starman as Tails, the "Level Complete" & "Invincibility" music from Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 play.
  • If Tails loses a life, the "Lose a Life" music from Sonic the Hedgehog (1991) on the Game Gear/Master System plays.
  • The 1up sound effect from the Sonic games on the Sega Master System plays whenever Tails collects a 1-Up. Originally, the sound effect that played was the 1up sound effect from Sonic the Hedgehog & Sonic the Hedgehog 2 on the Sega Genesis but was changed due to the length being too long.
  • When playing as Tails, the "PLAYER START!" screen before a level starts comes from Sonic The Hedgehog 2.
  • Prior to the v0.9 Rev C update, Tails' Sci-Fi Suit powerup was the Plasma Shield, in which Tails could do perform a second jump in mid-air. Also, Coins and Rupees were also magnetically attracted to him. Tails shared this powerup with Sonic.
    • Also, Tails' Mega Man's Suit was the only powerup where Tails would be able to shoot a projectile until the change of his Sci-Fi Suit powerup, now based on Fox McCloud of the Star Fox series.
