Superflat World is the first level in World 8, Avenue of Memories and is based on the classic Game & Watch series of games.
Layout[]
Professor Hector and the Mushroom Kingdom Coalition now arrive at a world where the Fusion Portal effect is at its strongest. Suddenly, a large game system resembling the Nintendo Game & Watch drops near them, and Master Hand appears, summoning the Game & Watch system to suck in the Coalition.
The level itself almost seems to exist solely on a small LCD screen. Enemies are flat black living stencils, the environment consists of monochrome shapes, and everything seems to "blink" its way around, rather than moving fluidly. Even the water lacks physical substance, seeming more like just a backdrop.
There are numerous enemies and hazards from throughout the Game & Watch series, along with a number of classic Nintendo enemies and objects converted into a monochrome Game & Watch format. The level passes through several areas modeled after various Game & Watch games, such as Helmet, Manhole, and Parachute. There are a number of hazards, such as tools raining from above, firemen carrying trampolines, and platform-carrying little men who pop back and forth from place to place. The player must make their way through this 2-dimensional realm of monochrome hazards to eventually reach the safehouse at the very end.
If the player clears the level for the first time, another cutscene plays as the Coalition escapes from the large Game & Watch system. Professor Hector questions why Master Hand didn't keep them trapped inside the Game & Watch system and also suspects what role Master Hand plays within the Fusionist's greater scheme. Regardless, the Coalition moves on to the next path, where the sky suddenly changes and 8-bit version of the Mushroom Kingdom.
