Stygian River is the 11th and penultimate level in World 5, Gehenna.
Layout[]
Due to some kind of dimensional merge, the local area has been transformed into a sinister and burning place that is filled with strange and hostile creatures.
The first section consists of an autoscroll, as the player will have to pass through countless enemies. The level also features digging through dirt and floating water bubbles.
The second section finds the player going underground in a mostly vertical auto-scrolling section while avoiding more enemies and flame eruptions. The hot bodies of water are not safe to swim in and can damage the player if touched.
After that, the player reaches the flagpole to clear the level. If the level is beaten for the first time, Prof. Hector reveals why he started the Coalition in the first place. The Harbinger arrived at his homeworld, nearly dead for betraying the Fusionist's Finest, and warned Hector about the Fusionist's plans. After revealing said plans, the Harbinger passed away. Prof. Hector also adds that his brother Prof. Vector has been kidnapped by the Fusionist.

Trivia[]
- Before the revamp, the background mountains in the first major area are a recolor from Metal Slug.
- Before the revamp, the tileset comes from Castlevania Symphony of the Night, recolored to a fiery red. Later versions recolored it purple.
- This level used to be known as River of Flames.
- The music used in this level is Sub 3 from Nox.
- The following changes were made to this level after being revamped in the v0.88 update of Mushroom Kingdom Fusion:
- The level is now an autoscroll level.
- The level no longer has a swimming section.
- Most of the enemies or obstacles featured in this level were previously absent.
- The following enemies were removed from the level: Flame Traps, Lava Geysers, Flame Imps, Vampire Bats, Hyperworms, Skull Fish, Tentaculats, Anemones, and Goo.
