Affiliation(s) | Child of Bowser |
Original Appearance(s) | Super Mario Bros. 3 (Nintendo, 1990), World 5 Boss |
Roy Koopa is one of the seven Koopalings of Bowser, serving as one of his underlings. In the older Mario games, Roy and his siblings were portrayed as Bowser's children, but that is no longer the case in more recent titles, starting with 2009's ''New Super Mario Bros Wii''.
History[]
Roy and the rest of the Koopalings first appeared in the 1990 (1988 in Japan) NES game Super Mario Bros 3, where they (under Bowser's order) steal magic wands and turn the various kings of the Mushroom World into various creatures. Roy is fought in the sky-based World 5 and attacks the player by shooting spells with his magic wand that can harm the player. He is also capable of causing earthquakes whenever he lands after jumping, causing the player to be stunned for a few seconds if he or she does not jump in time. After three stomps, Roy is defeated.
Roy and the other Koopalings return in Super Mario World where once again they help Bowser kidnap Princess Peach. Roy is the fifth Koopaling fought in Forest of Illusion. During the battle, the player has to stomp on Roy before he climbs on the ceiling and drop on the player. The battle is like the earlier battle against Morton but is tougher because the sideway walls enclose each time the player misses a chance to jump on Roy, giving the player less room to time their jumps on Roy. After stomping on Roy three times, he is defeated.
Apart from appearing as mini-bosses in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, Roy and the other Koopalings were dormant for years before returning on a regular basis in the New Super Mario Bros series starting with New Super Mario Bros Wii. In those games, the Koopalings are fought in a similar fashion like in SMB3.
Role In MKF[]
Roy's sprite is his appearance in the Super Mario All-Stars version of SMB3. He appeared in the stage, Castle in the Clouds, which is World 1-F4 in the world, The Mushroom Kingdom.
Roy's role in Mushroom Kingdom Fusion is the same as it was in Super Mario Bros. 3. However, he does not cause earthquakes that will stun the player whenever he jump. The player needs to stomp Roy five times while avoiding his attacks from a magic wand. After five hits, Roy will explode and the level is completed.
As of the v0.81 update, Roy is replaced with Lakithunder, who serves as the level's new boss.
Trivia[]
- Along with Wendy O. Koopa and Morton Koopa, Roy was one of three Koopalings that were featured as bosses in MKF throughout its development. However, Roy and Wendy have since been replaced by other bosses (Lakithunder and Pako the Octopus respectively) whereas the level Morton appeared in, Airship Armada, was removed altogether.
- Roy and Wendy can be fought in both MKF and the long-cancelled Super Mario Fusion: Revival. Iggy and Larry are also fought in SMF:R with the latter being fought twice for some reason. Lemmy and Ludwig are the only Koopalings who are completely absent in both MKF and SMF:R.
