Rotten Eden is the 4th level in World 5, Gehenna and is located in a dark and corrupted jungle area, where the jungle itself is trying to kill you.
Layout[]
The level takes the player through an expanse overgrown with plant life, much of it hostile. Much of the level takes place on small platforms, raised up above the ground by massive trees, or on hanging vines dangling perilously above bottomless chasms. Even the very air itself is choked with a multitude of deadly spores, which will explode violently on contact with the player.
Powerups are somewhat scarce in this level, raising the difficulty level significantly, especially with the high number of spores and enemy projectiles floating around. Also, much of the ground is covered in razor-sharp thorns, making simple movement through the stage a daunting task.
At the end of the level, the player will face Octeyes, the giant plant monster from the Genesis game Altered Beast. Defeating this boss will require some patience due to the fact that its only weak spot is the central eye and also Octeyes' ability to create a temporal protection barrier that will reflect any of the player's attacks. In addition, it will unleash lots of projectiles to hurt the player.
Enemies[]
- Spores
- Green Monsters (Ghosts N Goblins)
- Forest Armor (Castlevania)
- Demon Flower (Majyuuou)
- Dryad (Castlevania)
- Pod Alien (Blake Stone)
- Eukaryote (Final Fantasy IV)
Trivia[]
- The tileset comes from the obscure Japan-only SNES game Majyuuou. In the original source game, these tiles were used for an overgrown city area, which was the case in very early versions of the level.
- It is likely that Rotten Eden was formerly a verdant paradise full of life before changing conditions corrupted the garden slowly until it became what it is when the player goes through it.
