Retro Road is the 2nd level in World 8: Avenue of Memories and it is based on Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels (aka the Japanese version of Super Mario Bros 2).
Layout[]
Retro Road is an 8-bit version of the Mushroom Kingdom, where Mario and his brother Luigi start their timeless adventure here after enter a magical pipe in a Brooklyn, NY sewer (or New Donk City in more recent Mario media) while doing their plumbing job.
The first area takes place in the grass land, which is full of green, hill-like mountains, green pipes and mushrooms with eyes on the ground. This area is very straightforward as the player jumps on ? Blocks to get coins and power ups and uses springboards to get to the higher ground. Along the way, they must also fight the 8-bit versions of Bowser's Koopa Troops as well as other enemies that come from other games, like the Seals and Topis from Ice Climbers, Pookas from Dig Dug and Balloon Birds from Balloon Fight. One of the pipes in this area leads to an underground area that features a secret exit.
The last area takes place in at night as the player will cross though mushrooms trees above the ground as some parts of the area have lost their colors and are only black and white. The player continues to battle more enemies, such as the Octs popping out of the pits, Bloopers flying from the sky and Bullet Bills firing across the screen. At the end, there is a flagpole and the level has been cleared which allow to venture next level to 8-3.

Trivia[]
- Graphically, this level is based on the Japanese version of Super Mario Bros 2 from 1986, which was later released in America in 1993 as Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels as apart of the compilation Super Mario All-Stars on the SNES (although the game in its original form would not be seen until 2007 as part of the Nintendo Wii's Virtual Console.).
- This level was originally named Lost in Retro. It was much longer and featured an underground cave, an underwater and a castle section, In addition to a warp zone-like section featuring pipes that can send the player into any of the four sections of the level but the level proved to be difficult. Also, there was a boss fight against Retro Bowser, an 8-bit version of Bowser and was fought similarly to his SMB1 counterpart but was much tougher and the player had to actually fight him until an axe shows up. The latter castle section was temporarily scrapped until it was later brought back and revamped, with Retro Bowser returning as a Mini-Boss in Subspace Adventure, the final level in World 8.
- The following enemies were removed after the level was revamped and become slightly easier in the v0.82 version: Spinies, Lakitu, Fire Bros, Podoboos, Cheep Cheep, Firebars, and Bowser's fireballs.
- Podoboos and Firebars also had an ice/water version as their sprites were recolored blue.
- There were also gray Cheep-Cheeps that were similar in behavior to Fishbones as they were immune to fire attacks (unlike in the original SMB1).
- Fire Bros, while not appearing in SMB1, were reskinned into SMB1 Hammer Bros sprites but with their shells being recolored red.
- All of the non-Mario enemies were originally absent from the level.
Dialogue[]
- Message Block: Welcome to the secret Warp Zone! This secret area serves as a hub for all other areas!
