Pibble Plateau is the 15th level found in World 8: Avenue of Memories and is based on the 1990 game Snake Rattle 'N Roll for the NES made by Rare.
Layout[]
Pibble Plateau is a weird-looking retro castle with checkerboard-looking floors and some waterfalls inside where the two snake main characters, Rattle and Roll, made their way through this castle fighting through many bizarre creatures in order to go to the moon.
The level layout is done in a "2.5D", semi-isometric style, similar to the original game. Objects such as "?" Blocks, coins, and rupees are not present in this stage and are replaced by "snakeholes", Nibbley Pibbleys, and Snake Diamonds. "Snakeholes" are holes in the ground containing various items, each covered with a lid with a question mark on it to identify it. Pulling the lid off the hole (in a manner similar to pulling vegetables out of the ground) releases the item. Nibbley Pibbleys function like coins, although they do not remain stationary. Many can be found hopping in place around the level, but Pibbleys released from Snakeholes will roll away on their own, forcing the player to actively chase them. Red Pibbleys are worth 1 coin, blue ones are worth 2, and yellow ones are worth 3, but they move much faster than the others. Snake Diamonds are shimmering jewels similar to rupees. They are scarce, but each is worth 20 rupees.
Enemies for the level consist of a handful of enemies from the original game, such as Hopping Records, Krazy Seats, and Bigfeet, as well as various enemies from other retro video games, such as the Ghosts from Pac-Man, Balloon Birds from Balloon Fighter, and Topis from Ice Climber.
At the end of each of the first three rooms is a sealed door opened by standing on the base of a nearby scale. While in the original game the player needed to gain enough weight to activate the scale by eating Nibbley Pibbleys, the Coalition fortunately already weighs enough to trigger it.
At the end of the level, there is a fight against the IceFoot on top of the castle. He attacks by hoping around the area, trying to stomp the player. After taking enough damage, IceFoot explodes as a purple flag appears and lands on the ground. The player captures the flag to clear the level.
Alternately, the player can find the secret exit by locating a rocket in the first area. If they are fast enough, that is.
