Neon Labyrinth is the 17th level found in World 8, Avenue of Memories. It is based on the classic arcade game Pac-Man, with tons of content from other classic arcade games as well.
Layout[]
The level takes place in an enlarged version of a Pac-Man style "maze", with flashy animations and bright colors strobing in the background. Coins in the form of Pac-Man style "dots" line the hallways, with red coins brightly pulsing in the form of "power pellets", rather than blending in with the normal coins. Taizo Hori from Dig Dug greets the player at the start, having found himself lost in the maze. He gives the player a quick rundown of the area, as well as some brief intel on the level's enemies.
The classic Pac-Man ghosts will assail the player as they traverse the maze, made somewhat more difficult to avoid due to the winding turns and narrow passages. The player will also encounter enemies from other classic arcade games, such as Pooka and Fygar from Dig Dug, Mr. Hotdog, Mr. Egg, & Mr. Pickle from Burger Time, UFOs from Asteroids, and Crystal Eaters from Crystal Castles (which are, unfortunately, capable of eating any items or powerups they come across), as well as a few others.
After managing to navigate the first section of the labyrinth, the player will find themselves in a rather straight-forward section of the maze. Here, they will encounter the fearsome Pac-Chomp, a massive fusion between a Pac-Person from the Pac-Man series and a Giant Chomp from Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, who will pursue them relentlessly through the winding corridors chomping through everything in its path. The player's only option is to run away as any contact with the Pac-Chomp means instant death, regardless of what form the player's character is in. Only by reaching the end of the maze can the Pac-Chomp be defeated; dodging out of the way at the last moment and allowing the Pac-Chomp to collide with a large wall of spikes. The explosion caused by the Pac-Chomp's demise will clear the spiked wall from the corridor, allowing the player to get the flagpoles and clear the level.
Development History[]
The Pac-Chomp was first conceived back on the old IPBFree forums by member The Swordsman, as an idea for a possible Fusion boss. It has since been an internal reference on the boards, alongside other zany creations like the CacoBirdo, which is a fusion of the Cacodemon from DOOM and Birdo from Super Mario Bros 2.
