Mushroom Forest is the 18th level in the Mushroom Kingdom and It is a Fusion level, combining elements from both the Mario series, and the first level of the same name from NES game Little Nemo: The Dream Master made by Capcom.
Layout[]
This level takes place in a magical forest under the night sky, with huge mushrooms populating the trees, fireflies flying by, and huge green mountains in the background. This used to be a normal Mushroom Kingdom forest before it was fused with Slumberland, a dream world that the main character, a young boy named Namo, explorers in his dreams after he was invited by a messenger sent by the princess to be her playmate and give him some candy as a present, which later revealed to be magical spell that allows Nemo to control any animal for their abilities to explore Slumberland and get to the Nightmare Land so he can save King Morpheus from the evil nightmare king.
In the first area, the player first sees a message box that explains about No Man's Land before continuing to explore the forest by jumping on the mushrooms, some of which can bounce them around to the high grounds and swing across a lake full of Cheep Cheeps while dealing with the Mario enemies, such as Goombas in pajama outfits, Wigglers, Shy Guys, Antottos and Fangs, along with some new enemies from the Slumberland like Spiky Snails, Frogs and Helmet Hornets that chase the player around upon getting spotted. Near the end of this area, the player comes to a dead end and needs to dig out the dirt while avoiding the Volcano Lotuses that lets them in an underground cave that takes them to the next area. This part is a reference to the Helmet Mole ability that Namo used to dig through the ground in Dream Master, and they can even see the helmet mole on the left side of the digging area. There is also a sleeping friendly gorilla on top in the digging area that the player can find a way to get up there by using their flying power-up, such as a Raccoon Leaf, double jump (if the player's character has that ability), or Tails' flight ability to get up there and get a 3-up Moon.
In the last area, the player first explores the cave a bit, which features some green pipes that have Piranha Plants inside and Fangs that hang from the ceiling, before reaching a waterfall that they need to climb up by using the log falling from the waterfall and the bouncy mushrooms. Upon reaching the top of the waterfall, the player crosses through some more giant mushroom platforms while dealing with more enemies before making it to the flagpole to clear the level as the player enters a door that takes them out of the forest and into Storm Canyon next on the map.

Trivia[]
- The level was redesigned for v0.5 of the game to make it smaller and more streamlined, and also to reduce some of the level's excess difficulty.
- This level also based off a Japanese animated film, Little Nemo: Adventures in Slumberland made by TMS Entertainment Co., Ltd.
- Monty Moles and Snifits were originally found in this level but were replaced with Volcano Lotuses, Cheep Cheeps, and Buzzy Beetles.
- The Frog enemies from Little Nemo were previously absent in older versions of this level.
- According to the old MKF forum, this level was planned to be even longer and feature other levels of the Little Nemo universe but the idea was scrapped.
- Goombas now wear sleepwear in this level, which is a reference to the main character Nemo sleepwear outfit as he needs to sleep in his bed in order to enter the Slumberland. Prior to the v0.81 version of Mushroom Kingdom Fusion, Goombas had their default appearance.
- One of Nano's animal helpers, a blue lizard, is hidden in the second area.
- The lizard sprite is change to blue in MKF as in the original game, the lizard color pallet is purple and green probably to avoid referencing Barney the Dinosaur.
