Jigoku Zone is the first secret level in World 4, The Demon Realm, and is based on Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins, Bonze Adventure, and Yokai Douchuuki.
Layout[]
The player finds themselves in a Japanese-inspired graveyard, where they encounter many monsters and ghosts from various universes, some of which come from a random portal. The player can also spot lantern-like Beros that are safe to land on but can harm them if they get underneath their tongues. There are also vegetables hidden under the ground that the player can use to take down the enemies. At the end of the first area, the player enters a well to advance along the level.
In the second area, the player journeys further into the graveyard to evade more enemies and obstacles. They can also jump on cloud-like platforms to avoid the many spikey walls and ceilings. But watch out for brown, acid-like surfaces where cursed souls try to hurt the player.
In the third area, the player goes down the level and finds themselves falling into an underground cavern with some underwater sections, where the player must swim to the left to find a key as the path going forward is blocked.
The fourth area finds the player further down the cavern, as there are background flames at the bottom. The player must climb the ladders above while avoiding bottomless pits and more enemies to dodge.
The fifth area has the player navigate to the left using skull rafts that float downward once the player lands on one and smaller skull-like platforms that quickly fall down and disappear once the player lands on one. More traps and obstacles await the player, ranging from bodies of lava to dripping blood hanging on the ceiling.
In the sixth area, the player goes further down the underground graveyard, which soon turns into an icy one. More enemies and obstacles await the player, such as falling icicles, and the player better be careful moving or else risk slipping off into icy spike traps or bumping into enemies. A Fire Rod is provided for the player to fend off the many enemies that stand in the way, just in case the player is not equipped with a power-up. Further into the area, it is no longer icy as the player jumps on more cloud platforms while avoiding the spiky floors and ceilings. The player reaches a ladder to proceed to the next area, where they enter a pipe and venture further into what is now a volcanic-like setting. More of the enemies and obstacles seen earlier are featured here as the player moves leftward. At the end, there is a statue resembling Mario's statue form when under the Tanooki Suit.
Once the player touches the statue, they are teleported back outside the graveyard, where the flagpole is, and the player can clear the level.
