Hydrocity Zone is the fourth level in World 7: Isle of Genesis and is based on the second stage of the same name from Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

Layout[]

The level takes place deep underwater, inside an ancient temple in Angel Land. In the original game, Sonic and Tails go to this place after Knuckles, who thought they were the bad guys after listening to Dr. Robotnik's lies at that time, set a trap that led them to this place on their adventure to stop Robotnik from reactivating the Death Egg that crash-landed on the island.

Act 1 starts off as the player falls for a bit before landing on a platform. They can then can choose between the upper route or the underwater route as they fight through aquatic-themed Badniks. There is also a secret path is hidden very well in the first room and can be accessed via the underwater route. To get there, go to the wall at the end of the first room, where there is a key and a keyhole that leads to the secret exit. From there, the player can gain access the gumball mini game in the map.

Act 2 play similarly to act 1 but with some new stuff, such as a switch that can activate a geyser to use to reach higher grounds in the upper area and the chemical bubbles from the Chemical Plant Zone in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 that can hurt the player upon contact. There are two types of bubbles: ones that only travel a upper or lower tube and ones that hop around two tubes in-between.

At the end of the stage, the water mostly recedes in anticipation of the boss battle against Dr. Robotnik, piloting his powerful Screw Mobile attack craft in an attempt to stop the player. After defeating Dr. Robotnik, who flees away once the Screw Mobile is destroyed, the player reaches the Sign Post to clear the level. From there, a geyser will shoot up the player that send them to a mountain full of crystal.
