Gunstar Gambit is the 17th level in World 7: Isle of Genesis and is based on a combination of games: Gunstar Heroes, Sparkster, Alien Soldier, and Thunder Force.
Layout[]
The level begins at Black's Base, a military area where the player must get past various Soldiers, Badniks, and other enemies. Midway through the area, the player enters a sword-like portal above a pack of spikes, which launches them based on the direction the sword is pointing at.
After reaching a Checkpoint, the player enters another room and experiences the main gimmick of this level: a gameboard-like area called the Dice Palace. Here, the player must roll the dice to determine their next location on the board. There is also a SMB2 Mushroom placed just in case the player is low on health. Should the player fail at any of the below challenges, they will return to the Dice Palace instead of losing a life. Below are the many panels the player could land on.
- Happy Item Room—The player is supplied with various power-ups, coins, and other helpful items.
- Tetra Pyramid Act 1—The player is outside a pyramid area filled with various traps and enemies. They must also find various pressure plates to unlock blocked paths to reach the end.
- Tetra Pyramid Act 2 - The player is inside a maze-like pyramid filled with various traps and enemies. There are also ON/OFF Blocks that need to be hit to reveal other paths. The player must also find sword-like portals to teleport them to other parts of the pyramid, including an area with a large, orange portal that leads to the exit.
- Reach The Goal!—The player is in a small room where they are inside walls of a different color: yellow, red, green, and blue. A wall of a specific color will temporarily vanish, and the player must determine which path is open. The player must be careful and not get crushed by the walls or else be sent back to the Dice Palace. In addition, there are also a few Bubbles to watch out for.
- Guardian: Minion Soldier—A mini-boss room where the player must fight the Minion Soldier, a tiny soldier that random shoots energy shots at the player and occasionally summons two clones to fight side by side with him.
- Gorgon ft. Twin Vulcan—In a small, SHUMP-like section, the player boards Opa-Opa and must dodge various enemies and obstacles. At the end, the player fights the Twin Vulcan.
- Minecart Ride at Mountain Range—The player is onboard a minecart in as a horde of enemies, including Soldiers also riding on minecarts, trying to hinder the player's progress. The player must also watch out for bombs being thrown from below. On top of that, the player is also put on a bullseye's target as atomic bombs are being dropped on them.
- Guardian: Vortex Base—Inside the Vortex Base, the player must determine the pattern of a laser being fired on them. There are also vegetables placed around as a weapon. After a while, the Vortex Base will explode, and the player escapes.
- Destination: Daser - Eliminate All Guardians - In a desert sandstorm area that functions like a Battle Level, the player is onboard Opa-Opa as they must take out the Kachikorons, who serve as the main guardians of the area. Other enemies stand in the way and after the last Kachikoron is defeated, the player leaves the area.
- Guardian: Daser Serpent—Onboard Opa-Opa, the player must fight off the Daser Serpent.
- Guardian: Epsilon One—The player is now riding an elevator upward in an intergalactic-like area as random red lasers rain down on them. The mini-boss Epsilon One also appears as more lasers continue to be launched at the player.
- Rush Through The Aerodrone—Here, the player is inside the Aerodrone, where the player encounters various enemies and monitors.
- Guardian: Missiray—The player is now on an elevator heading downward as missiles fire at them from below. The mini-boss Missiray now appears and shoots its missiles and lasers at the player in a random pattern. After defeating this mini-boss, a green door will appear in the Dice Palace, which leads to the secret exit. The green door will be unlocked if the player finds the green key card on the first section before the sword ride area.
- Guardian: Super Gondola—The player is now in a small area where the Super Gondola appears and targets its large, blue lasers at them. The Super Gonola also launches fireballs and bombs at the player. To attack the Super Gondola, the player can throw vegetables at it. Alternately, the player can also attack with upward projectile attacks if their character is equipped with that ability. After defeating this Super Gondola, a green door will appear in the Dice Palace, which leads to the secret exit.
Once the player lands on the "BOSS" panel, they reach a small checkpoint section and reach the Final Battle. Here, they encounter Smash Daisaku, who serves as the final boss. He attacks the player by riding on his jetpack and firing bombs at them. When low on health, Smash Daisaku's jetpack is destroyed, and he now attacks by launching fireballs with his gun and throwing bombs that cause a green vertical blast. At the end of the fight, Smash Daisaku vows that he will return, only to explode off-screen. The player has now cleared the level.
