Green Grove Zone is the first level in World 7: Isle of Genesis and it is loosely based on the first world of Sonic 3D Blast for the Sega Genesis. It is also a compound level of sorts, combining many elements of the first levels from the many Sonic games series, such as Green Hill, Emerald Hill, and Angel Island.
Layout[]
Green Grove Zone is a lush green wilderness land filled with countless trees, checkbord walls, exotic plants, and many small waterfalls with a view of the sparkling, pristine ocean and many other islands of South Island in the background.
As this is the first level of the Isle of Genesis, the first two acts serve as an introduction to the Sonic gameplay elements, where instead of ? Blocks seen in the Mario series, the item containers seen here are Monitors with a picture of the items inside, such as Rings, Power-up, Sub-weapons, invincibility, 1-ups and Poison Mushrooms. The player will jump on top, break the monitor, and receive the item inside. There are also red Springs to bounce them high in the air to reach higher ground. Also included are swinging platforms to get across the pitfall or bed of spikes and cracked walls that can be broken by certain character abilities, such as Sonic and Tails' spin dash, Mario's Blue Shell, Wario and Waluigi's shoulder tackle, or any of the Mega Man characters RM explosive weapons like Hyper Bomb, for example, that lead them to a hidden area with Rupees or a monitor holding a strong power-up or sub weapons.
This level also introduces many of the most common Badnik enemies, such as Moto Bugs, Crabmeats, Butterdroids, Coconuts, Egg Pawns and many more throughout the level, and destroying them will free the animal buddies that were captured inside.
Near the end, the evil, brilliant scientist Dr. Robotnik (also known as Dr. Eggman) makes his first appearance to attack the player with his battle machine, the Egg Tumbler. He attacks by dropping a large spike ball around the ground. The player needs to use the two floating platforms to avoid getting hit by the spike ball, as once it stops rolling, Robotnik will float slowly to the ground and try to pick up the ball, as this is the only chance to jump on him for some damage. When Robotnick has half of his health left, the spike ball will start bouncing rather than tumble, making it slightly more difficult to avoid. After taking enough damage, Robotnik will flee, and it will allow the player to progress to the Sign Plate and clear the level as they travel to Bridge Zone next.
Alternatively, there is a secret area in Act 2 by going into the lower route, breaking many of the breakable walls, and crossing through the hidden platforms that takes the player to Green Hills Zone from the Game Gear version of Sonic The Hedgehog 2 as they travel to this grassy plain, dealing with some Badniks and avoiding the bed of spikes. At the end of the area, the player puts a key in a keyhole to clear the secret exit and unlock a gumball minigame on the map.
