Goomba Mines is the 2nd level in the Mushroom Kingdom.
Layout[]
This level is a traditional, Mario-based underground level that takes place in an underground mine populated by Goombas. Here, the player must travel through this mine while dealing with the aforementioned Goombas (which are recolored blue here), Koopa Troopas, Buzzy Beetles and other enemies while jumping on bricks to reveal hidden coins and riding on mini red elevators. At the end of the level, the player will take a pipe back to the surface and get the flagpole to clear the level.
To get to the secret exit that leads to World 2: Alternate Earth, the player has to find the hidden bonus room in one of the pipes and hit the ! Block. Next, they need to take the mini elevator to pass by the normal exit. Then, go down to the area where the Rebel Solider stands on the pipe and enter it, which leads through a realistic-looking cave.
This area is very straightforward, as the player travels through the cave while dealing with the Mario enemies and the Rebel Soldiers, armed with realistic weapons. At the end of the area, the player will see some coins that will spell out "W 2," a traditional phrase for all the other world exit areas. Afterwards, the player grabs the flagpole to clear this level and now has access to Alternate Earth on the map. However, before the player can go any further when clearing the secret exit for the first time, Professor Hector reminds the player that they should look for Luigi first as the pathway to World 2 is blocked until he is rescued in Jailbird Showdown.

Trivia[]
- In earlier versions of Mushroom Kingdom Fusion, the background of the 2nd area was from the mine levels of the 1994 SNES game Donkey Kong Country before it was changed to graphics from the Metal Slug games. In addition, the music used in this area was "Misty Menace" from the same game before it was replaced with another ominous-type theme. The newest versions feature the cave background from Shadow Dancer.
- The player can access the the secret area (leading to the World 2 warp zone) much like in reaching the warp zones (2, 3, and 4) in the original Super Mario Bros.
- Boomerang Bros, Paragoombas, and the Contra enemies Ledder and Basquez were originally found in this level but were removed after the level was revamped. SMW-style Koopa Troopas were previously absent.
- Originally, this level was based on World 4-2 from the 1985 NES game Super Mario Bros.
- In The Grand Canyon, the first area starts off in the cave, where the player left off after the World 2 exit area found in this level.
- The following changes were made to this level in the v0.91 update of MKF:
- The opening area before the player enters the pipe inside the mines was overhauled and is slightly longer.
- The bonus room now features an image of Yoshi's face.
- After clearing the secret exit, the path to the World 2 pipe on the map is inaccessible and is a green gate with the letter "L" and Professor Hector informs the player that they should find Luigi first before going down that path. That block disappears upon clearing the level Jailbird Showdown, which unlocks Luigi as a playable character. This change was made starting with the v0.91 update of MKF.
