Gelatinous Journey is the 9th level in World 8: Avenue of Memories. It is based on the 1989 NES game A Boy And His Blob: Trouble on Blabolonia.
Layout[]
The level takes place in a series of successively deeper areas beneath New York City. In the original game, the unnamed, teenage-looking boy and Blobert team up to explore the underground cave to collect treasure to buy a rocket ship to save Planet Bloblonia from the unnamed evil emperor trying to conquer it.
There are 5 distinct areas here:
- Surface: This area takes place on a street in New York City near a subway station. The stairs lead to the subway station. This is where the player first meets the friendly white blob named Blobert.
- Abandon Subway Station: A short area to learn all about the different types of jelly beans.
- Upper Sewers: This area is indicated by pipes over bricks in the background. The terrain changes to bricks and small pipes.
- Lower Sewers: This area is indicated by pipes over rocks in the background. The terrain changes to rock, and large pipes are present as well as small ones.
- Deep Caverns: This area is indicated by a dark cavern background. The pipes are gone, but the terrain stays the same.
There is a secret area in Blobolonia containing a keyhole exit accessed by transforming the Blob into a rocket. To access it, go to the lower sewers, and Blobert is required to transform into both a trampoline and a bomb to blow up those blocks on the top that cover a secret door.
Bean Effects:[]
- Punch Bean: Blobert "punches" a hole in the floor, negating collision for that part of the floor and allowing the player to fall through there.
- Tangerine Bean: Blobert transforms into a trampoline that acts as a springboard to bounce the player upwards.
- Cotton Candy Bean: Blobert transforms into a cloud, which can be ridden like a Lakitu's Cloud. The cloud can be moved freely around without falling.
- Licorice Bean: Blobert transforms into a ladder that phases through collisions and allows the player to pass through colliders when climbing.
- Key Lime Bean: Blobert turns into a key, unlocking doors, and is also used to complete the keyhole exit.
- Cherry Bean: Blobert turns into a bomb, allowing blowable blocks to be blasted away.
- Root Beer Bean: Blobert turns into a rocket, leading the player to Blobolonia, or the surface, where the secret and main exits are located, respectively.

Trivia[]
- Most of the tilesets come from 1986 Japan-only Famicom game The Goonies, which is based on the 1985 film of the same name.
- Earlier versions of this level had ghost enemies from The Goonies known as Ghost of One-Eyed Willie but were removed from the game starting with the v0.85 version due to how annoying these enemies were when they pop out of nowhere and were hard to kill if the player didn't have a strong power up, such as a Hammer Bro Suit.
- This is one of two levels in Mushroom Kingdom Fusion that takes place in New York City, the other being Skyscraper Domain. Originally, Pipe Labyrinth also had such a setting but was later retooled more as a Mario-centric level starting in the v0.85 version.
- If the player dies or clears the level, Blobert wave goodbye with a sad face.
- The graffiti on the wall of the subway contains several video game references:
- "The Murray Waz Here." (reference needed)
- "Vorticons Rule" written in the Standard Galactic Alphabet from the Commander Keen series.
- "Kill Skuls." An injoke within the City of Heroes community.
- "Porky iz Awesome." A reference to Porky Minch, a recurring antagonist in the Earthbound/Mother series.
- "Tunnel Snakes Rule!!" A phrase originating from Fallout 3, said by members of the Tunnel Snakes gang.
- Shadow Mario's insignia from Super Mario Sunshine.
- An advertisement by Tingle from The Legend of Zelda series.
- "Make Us Whole." A recurring phrase in the Dead Space series.

- "Free Man." A recurring phrase in the Half-Life series that refers to its protagonist, Gordon Freeman.
- "Smileyz" (reference needed)
- "All Your Base Are Belong to Us!" A memetic, poorly translated phrase originating from the intro cutscene of Zero Wing.
