It's time to set out on our mission!!
― Mario, Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins instruction manual

Game Boy Mario (also known as GB Mario) is a secret playable character in Mushroom Kingdom Fusion, serving as a throwback to the original 8-bit and 16-bit Mario games. He was introduced in the v0.9 update of MKF, replacing Classic Mario and his clone, Classic Luigi.

GB Mario is unlocked by completing the Bomber Fight battle stage.

Gameplay[]

Game Boy Mario is a faithful recreation of the original 8-bit Mario from Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins. That means he uses the original sound effects, the duck swim glitch, and has stiff controls. He's meant to be a novelty character to make the game more difficult.

Game Boy Mario only uses Super Mushrooms, Fire Flowers, and Carrots as power-ups aside from stackable power-ups and power-downs. Fire Flowers and Carrots replace other power-ups that would normally appear in stages.

Level Controls[]

See Basic Controls which goes over Map and standard Level Controls.

Below are non-standard controls specific to Game Boy Mario in his Initial forms (except when otherwise noted). Parenthesis indicate optional.

Running Hold LEFT or RIGHT + RUN Game Boy Mario moves in the Left or Right direction at a faster speed. Game Boy Mario can jump farther and higher while Running.
Higher/Further Jump [Running] + Press JUMP Game Boy Mario jumps in the air at a higher height (and a further distance if Running).
Stomp [Movement] + Press JUMP Jumping on top of enemies ("stomping") as Game Boy Mario hurts them, except for some enemies that can't be stomped on. Generally watch out for spiky headed enemies.
Auto Hop Hold RUN and Left/Right Running off of platforms near edges allows Game Boy Mario to perform a short automatic hop
Spin Jump Press and Hold DOWN While airborne, Game Boy Mario can do a deadlier jump that can avoid damage from certain foes and break bricks, as long as you have at least one powerup. Release DOWN to cancel your spin jump.
High Jump Boost Hold UP + JUMP Jumping while on the ground can increase your jump boost. Note that it does not work with the Bunny Suit.

Trivia[]

  • The presence of Game Boy Mario can be seen as a nod to Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins, being one of the favorite games of EddyMRA (then known as JudgeSpear), the creator of Mushroom Kingdom Fusion, and served as an inspiration of him creating MKF.
  • If the player clears a level as Game Boy Mario, the "Course Clear" music from SML2 plays.
  • If Game Boy Mario loses a life, the "Lose a Life" music from SML2 plays.
  • If Game Boy Mario grabs a Starman, the the music playing is the invincible theme from SML1, which is "Galop infernal" from Orpheus in the Underworld by Jacques Offenbach. Before the v0.9 update of MKF, this theme was used whenever the player's character grabbed a Starman in the four SML-themed levels found in MKF.
  • The 1up sound from SMB1 plays whenever Game Boy Mario collects a 1up.
  • In earlier versions of MKF, the Carrot power-up that Game Boy Mario currently uses was once Luigi's Raccoon Leaf powerup before it was replaced with the Propeller Mushroom from New Super Mario Bros. Wii.
  • When playing as Game Boy Mario, the "PLAYER START!" screen before a level starts comes from SML2 and also resembles a Game Boy handheld screen.
