Dry Bowser's Crypt is the 9th secret level in The Mushroom Kingdom. The player need to clear the Black Switch Palace first to have access to this level.
Layout[]
This level takes place in an underground cave full of bones and skeletons of former members of the Koopa Army who passed away in the Koopa Kingdom. This is also being used as a graveyard, with some tombstones that can be seen on the map.
The first area has the player enter a pipe and then explore the bone-full cave, jumping between the bone gaps and avoiding the bed of spikes while dealing with many undead Mario enemies, such as Dry Bones, Bone Goombas, Boos and Bony Beetles. At the end of this area, the player enter a pipe that first takes them to a checkpoint room with a Message Block that reveals that Dry Bowser has been resurrected and there's a loop trap in the depths of the cave before entering another pipe to continue.
In the second area, the player will have to pick the correct pipes and pathways, and if they pick the wrong one, the screen will turn white and loop back to where they were before. More additional enemies and hazards are encountered here, such as Honens, Eeries, Skeleton Bees, Ball N Chains, and Piranha Plants. Once the player picks the correct pathway, they enter a pipe to the next area.
The third area has the player crossing a huge dinosaur skeleton spine bridge while dealing with the Big Boos and avoiding the Lava Bubbles that bounce around the wall in a zigzag pattern before entering another pipe to the center of the cave.
In the last area, the player will jump over some lava while dealing with more enemies and avoiding the Podoboos and Fireballs being shot at them before being trapped in the room with Dry Bowser, who appears at the top and starts to fight them. He attacks by shooting fireballs and throwing hammers at the player before leeping in the air underneath them and trying to powerbomb them. The only way to defeat Dry Bowser is to trick him into breaking the floor underneath with his powerbomb. Once Dry Bowser breaks most of the floor, the player must make sure to get out of the way, or else they will fall into the lava. After the player tricks Dry Bowser one last time to do a powerbomb before he falls into the lava and melts, the player has cleared the level.

Trivia[]
- Originally, this level was named "Dry Bowser's Castle" and looked more like a Super Mario Bros./Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels castle (specifically World 8-4) level before it was heavily redesigned to look more like a cavern full of bones.
- The battle with Dry Bowser is similar to the Bowser fight in Super Mario Bros. 3.
- The music used during the Dry Bowser fight is a remix of the fight against Boom-Boom or the Koopalings in SMB3. Originally, it was a remix of the final boss theme against Bowser from the same game.
- Buzzy Beetles were originally were in this level but were removed and likely replaced with Bony Beetles. Likewise, Firebars also appeared but were likely replaced with Ball N Chains. Bloopers and Hammer Bros were also originally found in this level before being replaced with other enemies.
- Goombas are reskinned as the Bone Goombas from the 2012 Nintendo 3DS game New Super Mario Bros 2 starting with the v0.83 unstable version of Mushroom Kingdom Fusion. Beforehand, they were reskinned as the hockey mask-wearing J-Son enemies from Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins. When the level was originally known as Dry Bowser's Castle, Goombas were recolored gray, referencing how they were colored gray in the castle levels of the original Super Mario Bros due to the limited palettes of the NES.
- The tombstone that is seen on the map for this level is similar to the ones seen in the Pumpkin Zone map from Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins.
- In earlier versions of MKF, the player needed to clear the Green Switch Palace before they could enter this level.
