Dry Bones

Dry Bones is a zombified form of a Koopa Troopa. Dry Bones act like Koopa Troopas while they're walking, but when the player stomps on them, they crumble all over the floor. After a few seconds, the Dry Bones will return to its zombified self and roam around again. Dry Bones can be defeated through a Starman, a shell, throwing other enemies at it, or by a high-powered attack.

History

Dry Bones first appeared in the 1990 (1988 in Japan) NES game, Super Mario Bros 3, where they were only found in fortresses.

Dry Bones returned in Super Mario World, acting like they did in SMB3. Like Koopa Troopas in this game, Dry Bones are now bipedal. Some of them can now throw bones at the player. Dry Bones could now be defeated with a cape attack if the player has the cape flower, something that wasn't possible in SMB3 when the player tried a tail attack as Raccoon or Tanooki Mario (or Luigi). A similar enemy to the Dry Bones called Bony Beetles also made their debut in SMW.

Dry Bones returned in New Super Mario Bros where they were common enemies in fortresses and castles. A larger version called "Super Dry Bones" also appears. Unlike regular Dry Bones, Super Dry Bones could not be jumped on as the player just bounces off them. The only way to temporarily stun them is with a ground pound.

Appearance

In Mushroom Kingdom Fusion, Dry Bones mainly appears in its Super Mario All-Stars SMB3 sprite. However, Dry Bones as they appeared in SMW also appear in MKF and even co-exist with their SMB3 counterparts in some levels. The key difference between SMB3 Dry Bones and SMW Dry Bones is that the SMW Dry Bones can throw bones at the player, which was an ability that some of them had in SMW. One difference between the bone-throwing SMW Dry Bones and the ones from the original game is that the bones home towards the player's direction (even when its not facing the player) whereas the bones from the original bones travel based on the Dry Bones' direction.
