Doh's Dimension is the 10th level in World 9: Edge of Beyond and is based on the "BreakOut"-style game Arkanoid.
Layout[]
This level is made up entirely of special Arkanoid bricks, many of which can be destroyed either by hitting them below like regular bricks, or by being struck by one of the many bouncing Arkanoid balls ricocheting around the level. There are also multiple floating platforms, modeled after the spaceship Vaus, which served as the "paddle" in the original games. There are many areas where the player must break through formations made of the special blocks to continue, or proceed carefully past areas that are being quickly broken apart by a number of bouncing balls.
Besides the bouncing balls, which can hurt the player and be destroyed like normal enemies, and the occasional slow-moving enemy Arkanoid ship, there are a variety of enemies in the level from various sci-fi or cyberspace-themed games to match the stage's space-and-technology theme. These enemies include "Virus" enemies from the Mega Man Battle Network series, robots from the old Sega game PulseMan, and orb-like ships from the obscure sci-fi NES game Solar Jetman.
Development History[]
The level was originally created by Gladiacloud, but was not accepted due to various problems with the level's design (such as a complete lack of enemies). On November 2nd, 2009, developer Lars Luron announced that he would be taking over development on the level.[1] He said the level layout seemed to be "a little rough," but "some real polishing up could make [the level] really shine." Lars included changes in the level such as breakable Mario-styled blocks, which could also be broken by Arkanoid balls that bounce around the stage; a new hazard. Lars also coded some "cyber" and Sci-Fi enemies to appear in the level. Pulseman and Solar Jetman enemies, for example.
On November 10, 2009, Lars announced that he was essentially finished with the level, and posted a video playthrough of the level. [2]
