Dire Dire Docks is the 3rd fortress level in the Mushroom Kingdom. and is based on the world of the same name from Super Mario 64 for Nintendo 64 and its Nintendo DS remake, Super Mario 64 DS.
Layout[]
Dire Dire Docks, also know as WaterWorld, is an underwater fortress, where Bowser put his personal submarine here. This is one of the many places inside Princess Peach's castle that contain Power Stars which Mario (alongside Yoshi, Luigi, and Wario in the DS remake) needs to progress through the castle. The level goal is similar to the first power star mission in Dire Dire Docks, Board Bowser's Sub, in the original game.
The level begins with the player swimming down underwater, while dealing with Cheep Cheeps and other sea life, to enter a pipe into the fortress. Once inside, they must navigate along the dungeon while avoiding its spiky floor and various obstacles, made more difficult by the tide inside constantly rising and falling.
Into the checkpoint room, the player now appears in the dock station, where the submarine is. Unlike in Super Mario 64, they can actually enter the submarine. The last area takes place inside the submarine and The player must collect some keys while dealing with more enemies, such as Gordos, Bullet Bills, and Torpedo Teds.
At the end of the level, the player enters the command center to face off against Pako the Octopus while the submarine is operating. After Pako's defeat, the level is completed and the submarine will take the player to the Sky World in the map.
There is also a secret exit located in this level, which leads the player to World 3: The Megaverse on the map. To find this exit, the player must first find a rainbow-colored ! block inside the submarine to unlock the path that contains the pipe.
Once the path is unlocked, the player enters the pipe and suddenly find themselves in a blue mechanical base in the sea, where the advanced submarine Robot Master known as Dive Man lives. The first area is a straightforward swimming area as the player must deal with aquatic enemies from both the Mario enemies and Mega Man enemies. The second area has the water rising up and down as the player needs to avoid the bed of spikes on top of the water and the mines that explode if they get too close.
After that, the player will fight Dive Man and after his defeat, the player will clear the level and gain access to World 3 on the map.

Trivia[]
- This level is named after and based off the level in Super Mario 64.
- The secret area is based on Dive Man's stage in the 1992 (1991 in Japan) NES game Mega Man 4.
- The third area of this level was heavily redesign to resemble a submarine and even references the mission "Board Bowser's Sub" in SM64.
- The area taking place inside of the submarine is taken for Turtle Zone in Super Mario Land 2 The 6 Golden Coin.
- Koopa Paratroopas, Piranha Plants, Venus Fire Traps, and Gordos were originally absent in this level as were the Mega Man enemies since there was no secret exit.
- Boomerang Bros were originally in this level but were removed when the level was revamped in the Version 0.75 Update. In the v0.82 update, Bloopers, Urchins, and Rip-Van Fishes were removed from the level.
- Originally, Wendy O. Koopa was the boss of this level but was replaced with Pako the Octopus beginning with the v0.81 update.
- Gordos in this level is a reference to the Super Mario Land 2 enemies, Unibos, which behave similar to them and appeared in the 2nd level of the Turtle Zone map.
- The first area of the level was originally longer and the player had to swim down into the fortress past a maze of blocks while evading sea life and path-blocking Urchins.
