Desert Hill is the 6th level in The Mushroom Kingdom and is largely based on the desert levels found in Super Mario Bros 3.
Layout[]
This level takes place in the desert in the clear bright daylight, full of palm trees, cacti and the many pyramids seen in the background.
The main area has the player encountering the living cactus called Pokey. There are two versions of Pokeys here: the green ones from Super Mario Bros 2 and the yellow ones from Super Mario World. The green Pokeys can be stood on it and be picked up one head at a time to get rid of it or can be used it to get across a bed of spikes safely. The yellow Pokeys are very pointy and cannot be jumped on and can only be defeated by a strong power up, such as a Hammer Bros suit, Koopa shells, vegetables or Bombs. Other enemies populating this area include cactus-looking Goombas, Dino-Torches that shoot fire out of their mouth, Fire Snake and Nipper Plants. At the end, the player will use the Koopa shell to break though the bricks that is blocking the pipe to the next area.
The second main area takes place in a abandoned pipe water area in the desert as the player will have to find three keys to unlock the three gates blocking the pipe to the next area, in addition to dealing with more Goombas and Dion-Torches that populate this area. This is also where the player can get to the World 7 exit area by finding the rainbow-colored ! Block around this area after it is hit. The top pipe above the main pathway can be entered as the player will see some oil coming out of it.
The last area takes place around a pyramid with a waterfall around it as the player travels in and out of the pyramid while dealing with more enemies and finding a key to exit the pyramid. After exiting the pyramid, the player gets to the flagpole to clear the level and they will go to Sarasaland on the map next.
Alternately, the player can choose to clear the secret exit instead of the main exit. The World 7 exit area takes place in the Oil Ocean Zone, which is a massive petrochemicals oil refinery owned by Dr. Robotnik on West Side Island with many industrial buildings, complete with an oil rig, tanks, framework, and silos underneath an orange sky. In Sonic the Hedgehog 2, this was one of the places Sonic and Tails go to stop Dr. Robotnik from getting the Chaos Emeralds to power up his Death Egg in space and freeing the animal buddies along the way.
Act 1 has the player travel through the Oil Ocean Zone while dealing with both the Mario desert enemies and the Badniks, such as the octopus-like Octus and the seahorse-like Aquis. The oils in the bottom can be jumped on like quicksand but it's not recommended since it will usually lead the player to lose a life if they get sunk for too long. There are also oil tubes that the player can slide across and flame-launching solid platform that can crush the player if they get underneath it though they can use the top part to reach to the higher area once the platform has lifted itself into mid-air.
Act 2 introduces the Sonic-style level gameplay of taking a upper or lower route with the use of the elevators as the player battles more enemies and hazards along the way.
In the last area, the player faces off against the Submarine Eggman II, which is piloted by one of Dr. Robotnik's Elite Eggrobos. After it is defeated, the submarine will be sunken into the oil and the player will then find a goal plate to clear the level, gaining access to enter World 7 on the map.

- This level is partly based on World 7-9 in Super Mario Bros 3, which features many broken pipe mazes.
- The following enemies were removed after the level's revamp: Pansers and Monty Moles
- Piranha Plants, Venus Fire Traps, Chain Chomps, and Fire Chomps were originally absent.
- This was one of the first desert themed levels created for Mushroom Kingdom Fusion during early development.
- Prior to the v0.7 version of MKF, there was no secret exit to World 7.
