Darkstone Cemetery is the fourth level in World 4, the Demon Realm and is based on the first level from the classic Game Boy game Castlevania: The Adventure made by Konami.
Layout[]
The level takes place in a remote mountain graveyard that has since fallen into disrepair under a stormy clouds. This is the first place where the main character of the original game, Christopher Belmont, one of the ancestors to the Belmont family, travels through to get to Dracula Castle. Once there, Christopher defeats Dracula and his undead army to save his home village from Dracula's terror.
The level layout itself is fairly simple and straight-forward, with no special gimmicks or anything. Most of the danger in the level comes from the various enemies, many of which respawn infinitely. There are no spikes or damaging floors, and no bottomless pits apart from one or two large ones that must be crossed with the use of treacherous falling platforms. There are no ? blocks in this stage and, instead, there are Castlevania-style candles spread around that give out coins and rupees. Other items are contained in Demon's Crest-style urns found in strategic locations.
The player starts off in the forest along the base of the mountain, and has to gradually climb to the summit, fighting off various enemies from the Castlevania series such as Skull Pillars, Flea Men, and explosive Big Eyes, as well as enemies from other games, such as the Phantoms and Cyclops Bats from Demon's Crest and Keeses, which are small bats from the Legend of Zelda series. The player exits the forested area about halfway through the level, with the terrain growing more and more barren and rocky, until eventually it is made up of solid rock.
At the summit of the mountain graveyard, the player will find themselves face-to-face against the living armor Sir Grakul, who first attacks the players with his axe which he can can throw it like a boomerang or try to slice the player in half with flames coming out of the ground and travel across it. After taking half of his health, Sir Grakul's axe will break in to pieces and he will go into defense with his sword and shield as he moves around a bit and trying to stab the player with his sword. After taking enough damage, Sir Grakul will explode and the level is completed as a portal will open up to the Tainted Wasteland section, which is the player's next destination on the map.
