Bowser Jr. is Bowser's son and a minor antagonist in the Mario series. Since debuting in 2002's Super Mario Sunshine, he has assisted his father in his many schemes to kidnap Princess Peach and take over the Mushroom Kingdom, only to be thwarted by Mario and occasionally Luigi.
History[]
Bowser Jr. made his first appearance in the 2002 Gamecube game Super Mario Sunshine. Here, he disguises himself as "Shadow Mario" and causes havoc throughout Isle Delfino with his magic paintbrush to create loads of goop. Mario, who is vacationing with Peach and Toadsworth, is falsely accused of committing Bowser Jr.'s crimes by the Delfino descendants and is ordered to clean up Bowser Jr.'s mess. Bowser Jr. also kidnaps Peach and is ultimately fought by Mario, who is now assisted by F.L.U.D.D., a talking water machine designed by Professor E. Gadd. It is later revealed that Bowser convinced Bowser Jr. that Peach was his mother, which was his motivation for kidnapping her. In the end, Mario defeated both Bowser Jr. and Bowser, rescued Peach, and Isle Delfino is back to normal. Despite their defeat, Bowser Jr. tells his father he wants to fight Mario again and comes to terms with the fact that Peach isn't really his mother.
Bowser Jr. returns in 2006's New Super Mario Bros. on the Nintendo DS, where he assists Bowser once again in kidnapping Peach and attempting world dominance. He serves as the second antagonist and is the one who kidnaps Peach, and Mario has to chase them throughout eight different worlds. Bowser Jr. is also fought multiple times throughout the game in the fortress levels, similar to Boom-Boom in Super Mario Bros. 3. He can even be defeated the same way as Boom-Boom was, as all Mario (or Luigi) has to do is jump on him three times and he's defeated, though each battle does get more difficult. During the final boss battle, Bowser Jr. resurrects his father (who was defeated in World 1's castle and again in the first castle of World 8 as Dry Bowser) and uses his magic to grow him bigger than he was before. Still, both he and Bowser were defeated again by Mario, who once again rescued Peach. In the sequels, Bowser Jr. and his father are assisted by the Koopalings, who were originally thought to be Bowser Jr.'s older siblings before Nintendo decided that Bowser Jr. was Bowser's only child. But each game reached the same result: Bowser, Bowser Jr., and their minions were defeated by Mario and Luigi.
Bowser Jr. appears in 2007's Super Mario Galaxy on the Nintendo Wii, where once again he assists Bowser in kidnapping Peach and attempting world dominance. Bowser Jr. is fought twice, once on a giant robot called Megaleg and again on an airship, but both times he is defeated by Mario. Bowser Jr. also watches on as his father and Mario square off once again, but is in dismay as Bowser is defeated yet again by Mario. In the sequel Super Mario Galaxy 2, the story is the same: Bowser Jr. helps Bowser kidnap Peach and attempts to take over the entire universe; he fights Mario himself twice but is defeated both times; and ultimately, his father is also defeated by Mario, who rescues Peach.
Bowser Jr. has also appeared as a playable character in many of the Mario spin-off games, such as the Mario Kart series, the Mario Tennis series, the Mario Golf series, and so on.
Role In MKF[]
In Mushroom Kingdom Fusion, Bowser Jr. is the boss of the level Bay of Flames, found in World 1: The Mushroom Kingdom. He attacks by spitting fireballs at the player. To hurt Bowser Jr., the player can either jump on him or use projectile-based attacks, depending on the character being used. Once damaged, Bowser Jr. hides under his shell and rolls to attack the player. He is immune to attacks in this phase, meaning that the player has to dodge him. Bowser Jr. rebounds and begins attacking by throwing hammers at the player. After attacking Bowser Jr. again, he does another shell-roll attack. Bowser Jr.'s final attack includes shooting rings at the player, much like how Wendy O. Koopa attacks in Super Mario Bros. 3. One more attack on Bowser Jr., and he goes down in defeat.
Originally, Bowser Jr. had served as a mini-boss in Hell Prominence, the final level in World 1. He was found right before the final showdown with Bowser and was fought much like Bowser was in the original Super Mario Bros. castle levels. All the player had to do was hit the axe that was behind Bowser Jr., which would cause the bridge to collapse and send Bowser Jr. to the lava pit. The player also had the option to use projectile-based attacks against him to take him out before reaching the axe. After Bowser Jr. was defeated, the player then faced off against Bowser in the true final boss fight to end the level. In the v0.81 version of MKF, Bowser Jr. was removed altogether, and the player skipped ahead to the Bowser fight.
Appearance-wise, Bowser Jr. had the sprite appearance of Baby Bowser, the younger version of his father and antagonist from Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, as Bowser Jr. himself looked much like him.
Trivia[]
- It was mistaken that the player was instead approaching Baby Bowser instead of Bowser Jr. due to him using Baby Bowser's sprites from SMW2:YI.
- In older versions of MKF, the fight against Bowser Jr. ended the level Hell Prominence as the Bowser fight wasn't finished at the time.
- In the v0.88 version of MKF, Bowser Jr. replaces Boom-Boom as the boss of Bay of Flames
- Bowser Jr's dialogue before the fight begins differs based on the character the player has selected.
- Currently, Bowser Jr. has different dialogue if the player has chosen Mario, Luigi, Wario, Waluigi or Game Boy Mario. Bowser Jr's dialogue is the same if the player has chosen another member of the Mushroom Kingdom Coalition.
- Bowser Jr.'s dialogue reveals that Wario and Waluigi were working for Bowser when they trapped Luigi in a cage before being sucked into a pair of Fusion Portals in the opening cutscene.
- Bowser Jr. also had different dialogue if the player had chosen either of the classic Mario Bros. but they were removed from the game and replaced with Game Boy Mario and Bowser Jr's dialogue was reused for Game Boy Mario instead.
