Blocks of Doom is the 2nd secret level of The Demon Realm and it is based of the Hell areas in the DOOM series.
Layout[]
This level takes place in a hellish graveyard with some abandoned castle forts, huge trees with some demons sitting on them, and a twisted red sky in the background. The look of this level is inspired by the hell areas that Doom Slayer traveled through while fighting the hell demons on Phobos.
The main gimmick in this level is riding on the Snake Blocks, which debut in Super Mario World in some of the fortress levels. This concept was reused in future Mario games like New Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Galaxy 2. The snake blocks move and can turn left, right, up, or down as they follow a predetermined course over obstacles. The players must pay attention when they change direction, or else they fall into hell's pit below while dealing with the demons and monster enemies standing in their way.
The first area is a simple introduction to the Snake Blocks, as it only change simple direction while dodging some fireballs from the Imps. The Snake Block then goes through a narrow crevice under a graveyard area as the player has to fight through various enemies, such as Goombas, Zombies, Ravens and Cacodemons standing in the pathway while waiting for their ride. Once the player survives, they hop on the Snake Blocks which will take them to a checkpoint area.
The second main area is a bit tougher, as the Snake Blocks will start changing direction at random while the player dodges more fireball attacks from the Bone Towers and Demon Archers flying by. In the middle of this area, the player enters a castle fort with some Boos and Lost Souls populating inside and another Snake Block to ride. There is also some pathway blocked by the Cacodemon that the player must defeat quickly or else they missed a ride. After that, the player can switch between the two snake blocks while dealing with more demon enemies and the Pain Elemental at the end.
In the last checkpoint room, the player has to be careful of hitting some of the ? Blocks as some have Poison Mushrooms in them, as they go into another abandoned castle.
The last area is the most challenging, as instead of going from point A to point B, the Snake Block will go in a fixed circle pattern and even change directions in more random ways. The player will have to collect each of the three keys in order to unlock the gate and exit this area while dealing with the Ravens and Bone Towers on each side of the wall in this area. After opening out three gates, the player gets to the flagpole and completes the level.
