Birabuto Bash is the 2nd fortress level in the Mushroom Kingdom and is a mostly faithful remake of World 1-1, 1-2, and 1-3 of Super Mario Land, made in 1989 for the original Game Boy.
Layout[]
Birabuto Bash is a desert area full of many pyramids and oases around the kingdom of Sarasaland. In the original game, Mario first travels through this land to rescue a princess, who is later revealed to be Princess Daisy, from the malevolent alien Tatanga.
The first area takes place in a pyramid field in the daytime as the player will jump around, finding ? blocks for power-ups, coins, and a Starman while fighting through many enemies found in the original SML, such as Nokobons whose shells explode after being jumped on, Fighter Flies that hop around, and the fire-spitting Gaos. Other Mario enemies are found here too, such as Goombas dressed in Pharoah headdresses, Tweeters from Super Mario Bros. 2, and Sidesteppers from Mario Bros. At the end of this area, the players enter the door to the next area.
The second area takes place on the many treetops at sunset as the player platforms through the trees while fighting through more enemies, such as the spear-throwing Bunbuns and Lakitus throwing Spiny Eggs at the player from the sky. More Subcon enemies from SMB2, such as Beezos and Snifits, are encountered here as well. At the end of the area, the player enters the door that takes them to the pyramid.
The last area takes place inside the pyramid chamber, which is full of many hieroglyphic paintings in the background. Even more Mario enemies are encountered here, such as Spikes and Piranha Plants, in addition to more Subcon enemies like Porcupos and Ninjis. Goombas return here as well, but are now dressed as mummies. Not only does the player have to deal with the enemies here, but they must also carefully avoid falling into the lava, which leads to a life lost. At the end of the area, the player will appear in a familiar battle area from the original game before entering a checkpoint room that precedes the boss fight.
The player will battle the large Gao Sphinx known as King Totomesu. If the player loses a power-up during this fight or enters the fight without one, they can use the Nokobon bomb shells to hurt King Totomesu. After defeating King Totomesu, the level is cleared, and the player will travel to the Ocean Land section next on the map.

Trivia[]
- A very early version of this level featured red Ninjis, which can be stomped to be defeated instead of being picked up and carried like the purple Ninjis, but were removed. In addition, Lakitus threw red Spiny Eggs that turn into Spinies instead of the green Spiny Eggs that roll around.
- A unique feature of this level is that when the player uses the Starman in the first area, the music playing is always a remix of "Galop infernal" from Orpheus in the Underworld by Jacques Offenbach (which was also used in the original game instead of the usual Mario invincible theme) instead of the character-specific invincible theme. This theme can also be heard in the levels Muda Madness, Easter Island and Mythical Chai, all of which are also based on a world in SML.
- The music used in this level features remixes of the main level themes by Mario Freaks Orchestra.
