Beneath the Sands is the 5th level of The Mushroom Kingdom.
Layout[]
This level takes place in a sand-filled cavern, featuring tons of quicksand and cactus, as the player travels through this place to avoid the sandstorm from above.
The starting area has the player encounter a Fire Bro, whose fireballs bounce to the ground, similar to a Fire Flower power-up Mario uses, before entering the pipe to the cave. The Fire Bro is not required to be defeated before entering the first main area of the level as the player can either simply jump over him or pass him by.
The first main area takes place inside the cave as it introduces the player to the quicksand. While harmless at first, the quicksand can take the player down to the pitfall if they stand on it for too long, and the only way out is to jump repeatedly until the player pops out of it. It can also be used to get to higher ground. This cave is full of sand-made Goombas, Piranha Plants, bat-like Fangs and Buzzy Beetles, which have fire-resistant shells but it can be defeated in other ways like jumping on them and carrying their shells to throw at other enemies. The player will explore around the area before entering the pipe to the next area.
The second main is an area similar to the desert pyramid levels found in Super Mario Bros 2 as the player will pull out a chunk of sand while dealing with various Subcon enemies, such as Shy Guys and Snifits, while passing through the sand. Just make sure not pull the sand too much or it would lead down to a pitfall and the player loses a life as a result
The last area has the player battling through even more enemies, such as Fire Snakes or Nipper Plants, around the yellow blocks that form into a pyramid-like shape. There are also some more quicksand that the player needs to be aware of before reaching the pipe.
The player is back outside as the sandstorm is cleared as they will get the flagpole, clearing the level as their desert adventure continues.

Trivia[]
- The tilesets in this level were from the castle/fortress levels in New Super Mario Bros while the background is one of the fortress level backgrounds in the Super Mario All-Stars version of Super Mario Bros 3. Since the 0.73 update, this level was heavily revamped and no longer featured a SMB3-style fortress area with lava and instead looks more like a pyramid cave with diggable sand.
- Originally, this level featured Dry Bones, Firebars, Bony Beetles, Rotodiscs. Lava Geysers, and Boom-Boom (who served as the end-level boss) but they were removed when the level was revamped in the 0.73 update.
- Snifits, Tweeters, Ninjis, Shy Guys, Fire Snakes, and Nipper Plants were originally absent in this level.
- Starting with the v0.81 version of Mushroom Kingdom Fusion, Goombas are now reskinned to resemble sand. Originally, they had their default appearance.
