Bay of Flames is the 23rd level in the Mushroom Kingdom and is based on the Battleship and Airship levels of the Dark World from Super Mario Bros. 3.
Layout[]
This level takes place in a Koopa Army dock station, where they park many of their battleships along with many shipping containers near a bay across the mountains of the Koopa Kingdom. The airship levels were first introduced in Super Mario Bros. 3 as Mario and Luigi fought the Kooplings inside each airship to get the wards they stole from each of the kingdoms back to their original owners. This concept was later reused in future Mario games like New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Super Mario Galaxy, and a race track called Airship Fortress in Mario Kart DS.
The first area has the player travel to the dock station by jumping on the ship while dealing with the Hammer Bros family, such as Boomerang Bros, Fire Bros and Sledge Bros patrolling the place, along with the Bob-ombs wandering around and the cannons firing cannonballs and Bullet Bills at them. The player can also swim in the water, but it's not recommended since there are a lot of Fishbones swimming by and there is still lava underneath the water. At the end of this area, the player will need a pipe that will launch them into the air as the airship approaches in the sky.
In the last area, the player lands on the airship as it starts to auto-scroll, which plays similar to many of the airship levels found in SMB3 as they need to survive and dodge many of the cannons firing at them, avoiding the flames that shoot out of the Rocket Engines while dealing with more Bob-ombs, Bullet Bills, Rocky Wrenches, and Banzai Bills as many more ships passing by in the background. Once the player makes it near the end, they enter a pipe that takes them inside the ship to the boss room.
The player will fight Bowser Jr., who serves as the level's boss. After defeating him, the level will be cleared as the player gets off the ship and lands in an orange, autumn-like forest to go to Dungeon O' Doom next.

- In the v0.75 update, parts of the now-removed level Airship Armada were moved to this level.
- Goombas, Paragoombas, Koopa Paratroopas, Cheep Cheeps, and Jelectros were originally found in older versions of this level but were removed in the Version 0.75 Update.
- Fishbones, Podoboos, Sledge Bros, Banzai Bills, and Giant Bob-Ombs were originally absent in this level.
- Prior to the v0.88 version, Boom-Boom appeared as the boss but was replaced with Bowser Jr.
- Bowser Jr's dialogue before the fight begins differs based on the character the player has selected.
