Barren Badlands is the 22th level in the Mushroom Kingdom. The level is a dark, lava-filled area inspired by the Worlds 8-1 and 8-2 of the original Super Mario Bros.
Layout[]
The level takes place in a wasteland of the Koopa Kingdom with many thorn-shaped huge rocks, lava, and a purple sky underneath that serves as an entry point to this kingdom. This is a very straightforward level, as the player will travel to this wasteland as they jump at some bricks and ? Blocks for some coins, power-ups, and a Starman. There are many Mario enemies to watch out for, such as Koopa Troopas, Nokobons, Spinies, Buzzy Beetles, in addition to several hazards, such as the many lava pits where Podoboos come out of and many cannons firing Bullet Bills at the player. Near the end, the player needs to hit a P-Switch to make the bricks appear to cross over the lava pits while avoiding the Koopa Paratroopas and Banzail Bills before the timer goes out and makes it to the flagpole to clear the level as they go to the Bay of Flames next on the map.
Alternatively, in order to get access to World 9 Edge of Beyond on the map, the player needs to hit a rainbow-colored ! Block between the small lava gaps and continue their way normally before seeing a green robot coming out of a black pipe in the P-Switch section. The player enters the pipe that first takes them to what seems to be a normal underground area as they jump on the Donut Blocks while avoiding the Podoboos popping out of the lava. Once the player crosses the lava pits, everything now seems to have more metal structures as they deal with another Robot Walkers and a Skree on the ceiling before entering another black pipe to the World 9 exit area.
This World Exit area is very unique compared to the other past ones because instead of a fusion effect with another location, the player will see a bunch of space marines known as the Terrans. They go to talk to some of the Terrans about what is going on, and they explain that their battlecrusader ship landed here in the Koopa Kingdom after going through a fusion portal, and their archenemies, the Zerg Swarn race, have taken it over. Upon agreeing to team up with the Terran marines, they gave them some of their spare weapons and advised them about how to deal with the Zerg species before entering the ship. The main area takes place inside the Battlecrusader ship as the player battles the snake-like Zerg Hydralisk, many former Terrans members that got infested by the Zerg virus, and some more robots. There are many weapons and grenades to use to clear them out quickly.
In the last area, the player must survive the many infested terranes coming their way in an elevator as the living Terran Marines take them off-screen. After surviving all that onslaught, they clear them out of the ship, activate an emergency generator to put the battle crusader back online, head off to the fusion portal, and make it back into their world as one of the members thanks them for their help and talks about the epicness of space battles. After which, the player gets to the flagpole and clears the level, as they can now access Edge of Beyond on the map.

Trivia[]
- In earlier versions of MKF, there was no secret area in this level and the enemies from StarCraft and other space-themed games were absent.
- Goombas and the Angry Sun was originally in this level but was removed while Dry Bones and Swoopers were added in the updated version. In even older versions of MKF, SMW-style Koopa Troopas, Pile Driver Micro-Goombas, Auto-Snifits, Thwimps, Ninjis, Fire Bros, and SMB3-style Bob-ombs were also found.
- In the v0.82 version of MKF, the following enemies were removed: Fire Snakes, Monty Moles, Missile Bills, Boos (SML2 skin), SMB3 Dry Bones and Swoopers.
- Boos originally had their default SMB3 appearance but now appear in their SML2 sprite.
- In the last part of area where the player had to use an elevator to evade Infested Terrans that move in an increasingly faster speed, there would be three more Infested Terrans, each of which block a pathway with seemingly no way for the player to escape to the exit without taking damage. However, that part was removed and the Bonus Win music from the Super Mario All-Stars version of Super Mario Bros 3 plays after the player successfully survives the onslaught of marching Infested Terrans.
- Buzzy Beetles originally had their SMB3 sprite appearance but was changed to their SMB1 sprite appearance.
