Asteroid Belt is the 12th level found in World 9: Edge of Beyond. This level is based on Salamander 2.
Layout[]
The player is on a distant, rocky planet as a rain of Asteroids continuously pores down. Intergalactic enemies and spaceships are located here too, meaning the player must stay aware. The level also contains low gravity, which increases the player's jumping height as they can now reach higher platforms. Fox McCloud is seen at the beginning, informing the player that his Airwing and the Great Fox battleship aren't strong enough to pass through, meaning that the player must past through this area without him.
The level is divided into three sections, with the second section containing a hidden spaceship from the 1979 Atari arcade game Asteroids that leads to a secret area based on said game, leading to a secret exit. To reach the spaceship, go right after triggering a P-Switch. Be careful that the spaceship may take off if you take too long. The third section contains auto-scrolling, as the player must keep pace and dodge the many obstacles and enemies, or else risk falling off the screen and losing a life. At the end, the player meets up with Fox, who was able to get through the asteroid belt after all, and arrives at the flagpole to clear the level.
