Ancient Citadel is the 4th level in Alternate Earth and takes place in an ancient temple located in the Mexican jungles. The Coalition continue their exploration and enter the temple to recieve a precious artifact guarded by the natives.
Completing this level will unlock Wario as a playable character.
Layout[]
When played for the first time, the level opens up in a cutscene where a pair of Natives are guarding an entrance to a temple containing a scared golden artifact. However, Wario, who was sucked into this dimension, takes out the guards and attempts to capture the artifact for himself. However, he is turned into a golden artifact.
The level is divided into five sections:
- The first section has the player start outside of the citadel which features a gate entrance.
- The second section already takes place in a half-submerged citadel with various traps and enemies.
- The third one acts as a transition between the second and fourth sections.
- In the fourth section features lava, flamethrower traps, and various fire-based enemies.
- The fifth section contains the precious artifact to clear the level.
After clearing the level for the first time, the coalition encounters the recently petrified Wario. Soon after, the curse is lifted on the greedy plumber, and he confronts the Mario brothers, due to having been paid to capture them for Bowser. Thanks to some quick thinking from Roll, she and Professor Hector are able to convince him that the Fusionist has a great treasure. Sensing an opportunity for riches, Wario quickly decides to join up with the Coalition.

Trivia[]
- The original name of this level was "Aztec Citadel".
- Thwomps, Zig Zag Lava Bubbles, and Giant Shy Guys were originally in this level but were removed. Scorpions were also originally in this level but were also removed. Other enemies that were removed in this level included Pansers, Thwimps, Noko Bombettes, Stilt Guys, Rotodiscs, Armies, and Anerus.
- Fire Snakes were previously absent from this level.
- The ? Blocks were reskinned to resemble the colors of the Mexican flag (and featured an upside down question mark) in earlier versions of this level before the final redesign of the level, where the blocks now look like the ones from the Super Mario All-Stars version of Super Mario Bros.
- The TNT Crates and Nitro Crates from Crash Bandicoot were also originally found in older versions of this level but were removed.
- Prior to the v0.81 version of Mushroom Kingdom Fusion, Rebel Soldier, Rebel Riflemen, Bikers, R-Shobu, Nop-03 Sarubia were also found in the pre-v0.81 of this level. There was also a section right before the citadel and contained a large amount of Rebel Soldiers to pass through but it was removed in starting in the v0.81 version of MKF.
- Prior to the v0.91 update, the end goal of this level is triggered when the player touched a golden statue of Pitfall Harry Jr., a character from the Pitfall series. However, it was changed into a golden artifact of Wario as it not only clears the level but also a cutscene when Wario is unlocked as a playable character when the level is cleared the first time.
